Story Time Starter: Families

Families Story Time Starter

This month’s theme is all about families! This is a great topic for the upcoming school year, for both children who are going to school for the first time or children who are going back to school. All families are different, but every family is special and unique. The following books are perfect for the preschool crowd, ages 3-5. Many stories feature diverse families.

All of these books are available for checking out.

Check out some of these songs available at the library.

Rhymes & Fingerplays

Learn some new rhymes or fingerplays.

Good Night
One fluffy quilt on my bed,
Two little pillows for my head,
Three teddy bears to hold on tight
Four kisses from Mom for a restful night,
Five hugs from Dad, and off goes my light!
Good night!

Jump, jump, jump (Jump)
Goes the kangaroo (Jump)
I thought only one (Hold up one finger)
But now I see two! (Hold up two fingers)
Momma and her baby
With his head popping out (Make a fist, have other hand pop out)
He holds on tight (Hug yourself)
As they jump all about! (Jump)

Let’s All Do a Little Clapping
(Tune: We Wish You a Merry Christmas)
Let’s all do a little clapping
Let’s all do a little clapping
Let’s all do a little clapping
For our family.
(Jumping, bending, twirling)

My Family
This is mama, kind and dear. (point to thumb)
This is papa, standing near. (point to pointer finger)
This is brother, see how tall! (point to middle finger)
This is sister, not so tall. (point to ring finger)
This is baby, sweet and small. (point to pinky finger)
This is the family, one and all! (wiggle all fingers)

Where Is Family?
Where is mommy? Where is mommy? (put hands behind back)
Here I am! Here I am! (bring hands around from behind the back)
How are you today, ma’am? Very well, I thank you! (wiggle thumbs, one at a time)
Run away, run away! (hide hands behind back again)
(Daddy, Brother, Sister, Baby, Family.)
