Library Card Sign-up Month

Library card sign-up month is here, and it is a great reminder of what the library has to offer! We have so many things besides books — things like bikes, board games, tools, telescopes, and cake pans — but we have lots of books, too.

We have created a list of books to complement the American Library Association‘s national ad campaign featuring teenage activist and author Marley Dias. Many of the books come from her list of #1000BlackGirlBooks. With selections from children’s picture books, non-fiction books, and juvenile fiction books, you’ll find ample books to share with students all month long.

Check out this sampling of books:

Children’s Picture Books

  • Ambitious Girl by Meena Harris
  • Brown Sugar Babe by Charlotte Watson Sherman
  • Dreams for a Daughter by Carole Boston Weatherford
  • Magnificent Homespun Brown: A Celebration by Samara Cole Doyon
  • Your Name is a Song by Jamila Tompkins-Bigelow

Non-Fiction Books

  • Exquisite: The Poetry of Gwendolyn Brooks by Suzanne Slade
  • Lift as You Climb: The Story of Ella Baker by Patricia Hruby Powell
  • Marley Dias Gets It Done: And So Can You! by Marley Dias with Siobhan McGowan
  • R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul by Carole Boston Weatherford
  • Shirley Chisholm Dared: The Story of the First Black Woman in Congress by Alicia D. Williams

Juvenile Fiction Books

  • Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Woodson
  • Genesis Begins Again by Alicia D. Williams
  • The Only Black Girls in Town by Brandy Colbert
  • Ophie’s Ghosts by Justina Ireland
  • Some Places More Than Others by Renée Watson

And here is a handy printable listALA Library Card Sign-up Month Booklist (Sept. 2021), with all of the books. You can also sign up for a new card on our website!
