This month features National Voter Registration Day on September 22nd, but don't worry if you're just a kid, you can find lots of other ways to be involved!
First of all, encourage (or beg!) your grownups to register to vote. This year will be a presidential election, so voting is more important than ever. Second, we have a voting packet that you can come grab the next time you come visit the library. In it, you'll find activities and games, a make-your-own voter registration card to practice for when you're older, a craft, and a ballot. We want you to rock the vote by participating in choosing your favorite cookie, whether it is an Oreo or a chocolate chip cookie, and the cookie with the winning vote will be handed out the week of the election in November. Third, we have a display up with lots of books about voting and the importance of participating and making each voice heard.
So come join us at the library (and any branch location) to vote on your favorite cookie and learn about the election and voting process! Rock on, young friends!
Here are some books to get you ready:
V is for Voting by Kate Farrell is a brand new ABC book for children wanting to learn about civil rights and social justice.
What is an Election? by Caryn Jenner teaches children how the concept of democracy has developed over the years.
A Vote is a Powerful Thing by Catherine Stier is another brand new book, which teaches how children can get involved in local and national issues.
When You Grow Up to Vote by Michelle Markel (originally written by Eleanor Roosevelt) outlines the the pillars of citizenship and democracy.
We Are the Change by Selino Alko highlights several social reformers and champions of civil rights, including Sonia Sotomayor, Maya Angelou, and Barak Obama.
