Your Vote Counts!

Voter Registration Day!

According to the Ohio Secretary of State, Ohio had a 71% voter turnout for the 2016 presidential election with Richland County having 68% of registered voters cast their ballot. This year we hope to see that percentage increase. Whether you’ve never registered to vote or just need to update your name or address, stop by any of our locations and we’ll make sure you get the form you need.

Every Vote Counts, Rock the Vote, ote …we’ve all heard the slogans and we’ll be hearing a lot more of them with the General Election coming up on November 3rd. This election we will be voting for a President, U.S. Representative, Ohio Senator and Ohio Representative along with numerous other elected positions and issues. You still have time to register to vote. The deadline to register is October 5 and the library is here to help. All of our library locations can supply you with a voter registration form. Stop in at any of our branches, fill out the form, and if you like the library will deliver it to the Richland County Board of Elections. If you are going to be out of town on November 3rd or would just like the option of filling out your ballot at home, fill out an Absentee Ballot Application which are also available at all of our locations. Visit our Voting Subject Guide for information about voter registration, absentee ballots and early voting.

Groups have had to struggle for their equal voting rights throughout history. Women finally gained the right to vote in 1920, African Americans marched from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery to spotlight the issue of black voting rights in 1965 and young people gained their voting rights when the age to vote was lowered from 21 to 18 in 1971. All of these groups helped pave the way for us to vote today. However, not everyone takes the time to vote.

The library will be participating in National Voter Registration Day on September 22 so look for displays and activities going on at all of our locations. We will have a limited amount of buttons that say “Every Vote Counts” available on that day. Grab a button and proudly wear it when you are out and about to help us get the word out.

On November 3rd, we want you to be able to say you rocked the vote, your voted counted and you oted!
