Scoob! - Movie Review

In addition to Scooby, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, and Fred, Scoob, the newest animation in the Scooby-Doo franchise, features the Blue Falcon, Dynomutt, and Captain Caveman, all of which are other iconic Hanna-Barbera characters. The film opens with the Mystery Gang’s origin story and an updated theme song sequence featuring direct nods to the original series. (Yes, the creepy yellow scuba diver is there!) However, what surprised me the most was that the villain in Scoob wasn’t a masked monster, swamp creature, or space alien – it was Dick Dastardly, one of Hanna-Barbera’s other characters, and the viewer knows it is him the entire time. (I could be wrong, but I don’t remember this ever happening in the original Scooby-Doo series.) Throughout the film, Dastardly is attempting to locate the skulls of Cerberus, the three-headed dog that guards the Underworld, and it is up to the Mystery Gang (and some of their Hanna-Barbera friends) to prevent that from happening. Overall, I enjoyed the movie: There were lots of giggle-inducing moments (including some aimed specifically at adults) and the overarching themes were positive (including “as people grow and learn, it doesn’t mean friendships grow apart” and “it is okay to be scared sometimes”). A film that will appeal to kids of all ages, Scoob is worth a watch.

Overall Rating: B+
