Book Review: Once Upon a Star by James Carter

Once Upon a Star by James Carter
From Miss Sarah at Bellville Branch

Once Upon a Star by James Carter is a wonderful poetry book about space that goes along perfectly with our Summer Library Program theme of A Universe of Stories.   The book explains through rhyme how the universe began. It also includes “sciencey stuff” written as an acrostic poem such as “The sun, our star, was born in a nebula almost five billion years ago.” This a great introduction for children about how stars like the sun are formed.  The cover and the illustrations are eye-catching and vibrant.  Children will enjoy learning about stars in a simple poetic way.

The library owns tons of books about stars.  Here are some worth checking out:

  • A Child's Introduction to the Night Sky: The Story of the Stars, Planets, and Constellations, and How You Can Find Them in the Sky by Michael Driscoll
  • Constellations: A Glow-in-the-Dark Guide to the Night Sky by Chris Sasaki
  • Henry’s Stars by David Elliot
  • Little Bear, You're a Star!: A Greek Myth about the Constellations retold and illustrated by Jean Marzollo
  • The Little Dipper by Stephanie True Peters
  • Once Upon a Starry Night: A Book of Constellation Stories by Jacqueline Mitton and Christina Balit
  • Starry Skies by Samantha Chagollan
