The Hate U Give - Movie Review

Melinda - AV April 26, 2019

This dramatic-controversial film, The Hate U Give is based off the 2017 best- selling novel written by Angie Thomas. This novel/film is a powerful story that tackles race, police brutality, and black identity. The story centers on 16- year- old Starr Carter (played by Amandla Stenberg) that switches between two different worlds. She lives in a poor black neighborhood, Garden Heights, but attends and plays basketball for a suburban, preppy private school Williamson Prep, which is way different than her life at home. Starr struggles every day to separate the two worlds. This struggle becomes even tougher one night when she is faced with a devastating fatal tragedy that she witnesses with her child-hood best friend, Khalil (played by Algee Smith). Starr is then faced with the decision to keep quiet to protect her world at Williamson Prep, or find her voice and stand up for her neighborhood and community and fight for what she knows and feels is the right thing to do! So, throughout the film, Starr has to fight against the odds on her decision because it cannot only destroy her, but it can also put her family in danger as well! I recommend that this is a film that everyone should watch -it’s emotional, educational, and it portrays real life events that are happening in the world right now. I read the book and then watched the movie-both of them left a strong impact on me. I give this film an overall rating of an A.
