The Mule - Movie Review

Amy - AV April 05, 2019

Clint Eastwood (Earl Stone) makes his successful return to the big screen as a drug mule for a Mexican cartel run by Andy Garcia (Laton). Earl is a Korean War veteran and a 90 year old day-lily gardener. The story centers more on the relationships between Earl and his family (played by Dianne Wiest, Alison Eastwood, and Taissa Farmiga who are his ex-wife, daughter, and granddaughter respectively), and the chase of DEA Agent Colin Bates (Bradley Cooper) to nab the elusive “Tata” than it does on the seedier side of drug trafficking. The movie has some poignant family moments as Earl comes to the realization of what he missed out on. There are also funny moments as Earl interacts with the various players in the drug cartel as well as some tense times with new cartel members. Earl might have started out as an unwitting drug trafficker, but the film leads the viewer to believe that he continues his illegal endeavors for mostly altruistic reasons. The ending of the film is no huge surprise as Mr. Eastwood masterfully fleshed out his character. This movie is entertaining and has a few underlying thought provoking messages for those who choose to hear them. Overall rating: A
