Borrowing Bunnies: A Surprising True Tale of Fostering Rabbits by Cynthia Lord is a heartwarming book about the love of pet rabbits. This book speaks to anyone with a love of bunnies or a family that would like to add one to their house. The reader is drawn into the book with the illustrations and stunning photography, making this an easy nonfiction book that kids will want to read, and children will learn about the care and behavior of a rabbit.
The cover features a Netherland Dwarf Rabbit with a who-could-say-no-to-that face looking back at you. Each photo is crystal clear, and every hair is easily seen on the rabbit on the cover. Lord’s husband is the photographer, and with so many perfect shots, the reader can tell that it was someone who had close contact with the rabbits. This book is truly a cuteness overload!
Lord educates the reader to prevent her from unknowingly getting an animal that will destroy her house. We also learn about the likes and dislikes of rabbits and how to best accommodate them to their new surroundings. After reading this book, it is clear a rabbit is no easier than owning a dog. Lord has a way with words, finding the right tone when two babies don’t make it; however, we do see how the other babies spend their time playing. On Facebook, Lord lets others follow her on the rabbit journey. That is what inspired this book!
Lord also has a foster fail, which is when you foster an animal but ultimately keep it. She keeps Benjamin, but makes sure the others find great homes. I wouldn’t call it a fail, because Benjamin found the perfect home.
I found it difficult after reading this book not to run out and buy or rescue a rabbit, so readers beware! I would consider this book an excellent selection for any child, especially one that loves animals!
