Story Time Starter: Here & There

March 18, 2019

I am here, and you are there! We have some great stories to share! Rhyming and opposites in stories make reading fun and this month's Story Time Starter has both. Won't you share a "here and there" story time with us?

First, let's look at some fun here and there books! Let’s Go: The Story of Getting from There to Here by Lizann Flatt is a great read about transportation and Travel. One way to get around is a garbage truck like the one in Smash! Mash! Crash! There Goes the Trash! by Barbara Odanaka. You’re Finally Here! by Melanie Watt is a cute, and lesson learning, story about arriving. For some fun warmer-weather stories, try Spring is Here by Wil Hillenbrand and There’s a Hole in the Log on the Bottom of the Lake by Loren Long. There’s a Bear on My Chair by Ross Collins tells the story of the bear who won't move and the mouse who wants his chair. And lastly, enjoy some interactive storytelling with Press Here by Herve Tullet.

It's rhyme time! Here are a few fun rhymes to try!

Here is the Beehive
Here is the beehive, but where are the bees?
They’re hiding inside, where nobody sees.
Watch them come out of the hive.
One, two, three, four, five. Buzzzzz!

Here’s a Green Leaf
Here's a green leaf, and here's a green leaf (hold out left hand, then right)
And that you see makes two                          (hold up 2 fingers)
This is the bud that makes the flower            (hold palms together)
Now watch it bloom for you                            (slowly separate palms)

Old MacDonald
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.
And on his farm he had a chicken, E-I-E-I-O.
With a cluck, cluck here, and a cluck, cluck there;
Here a cluck, there a cluck, everywhere a cluck, cluck.
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.
(repeat with different animals and sounds)

For some here and there songs, listen to "Driving Here, Driving There" on Jim Gill Sings Do Re Mi on His Toe Leg Knee. Or check out Laurie Berkner’s Favorite Classic Kids’ Songs for "There Were Five in the Bed," "There’s a Hole in the Bucket," and "There’s a Little Wheel a’ Turning in My Heart." Of course, Hot Potatoes! The Best of the Wiggles has "Here Come the Chicken" to finish off your music and dance time!

When stories are over and songs are done, it's time for a craft! Try one of these here!

Happy reading!
