Story Time Starter: Octopuses

February 05, 2019

Sea creatures can make a great topic for story time, especially when it comes to octopuses! These interesting, adaptable creatures are as fun to learn about as they are to read about! Let's explore some great octopus stories, songs, and rhymes!

Fun stories are what make story time, well, story time! Some really good - and informative - stories to read include Tickly Octopus by Ruth Galloway, which follows Octopus as he discovers he can do more than just tickle; Octopus Escapes Again! by Laurie Agnes, showing how poor Octopus wants to eat but is always the one almost eaten; and the non-fiction title Octopuses by Carol K. Lindeen, for lots of info on what octopuses are and where they live. For even more fun and silly octopus stories, try The Octopuppy by Martin McKenna, An Octopus Followed Me Home by Dan Yaccarino, or Take Your Octopus to School Day by Audrey Vernick.

Add some octopus songs to your story time for movement and a dance break! Try "Do the Octopus" on Playhouse Disney Let's Dance! Or listen and sway to "Eight-Legged Octopus" from Justin Roberts' Lemonade. If more than one song is what you're looking for, try Oceans.

Rhymes enforce important early literacy skills, so add one or two of these to your stories:

Five Little Octopuses:
Five Little octopuses swimming by the shore,
One swam away and then there are four
Four little octopuses playing catch me,
One swam away and then there are three
Three little octopuses playing peek-a-boo
One swam away and then there are two
Two little octopuses having so much fun
One swam away and then there is only one
One little octopus was sad and all alone
He swam away and then there are none

Five Little Octopuses:
One little octopus all alone and blue
Along comes a friend and now there are two
Two little octopuses swimming fast and free
Along comes a friend and now there are three
Three little octopuses dart near the ocean floor
Along comes a friend and now there are four
Four little octopuses love to dip and dive
Along comes a friend and now there are five
Five little octopuses all had so much fun
Together they played, until the day was done!
