I had to review Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer 2 due to the fact that I reviewed the first Equalizer by Denzel Washington almost four years ago this month back in 2014. By me being a dedicated Denzel fan, he has never until now appeared in a sequel to one of his films, so I was highly anticipating seeing the turnout of this film. Denzel returns on the big screen as Robert McCall, retired CIA agent who has left the retail industry and is now a Lyft driver. Happily, this still allows him to come across unsavory characters and keeps him open to punish them for their misdeeds. He even gets the occasional off-the-books freelance assignments from his best friend Susan Plummer (Melissa Leo). For the most part, however, he seems to be in a bit of a boring routine of daily odd jobs—trying to help an elderly Lyft customer recover a painting stolen from his family by the Nazis and mentoring a neighbor kid, Miles by encouraging him to paint a mural instead of dealing drugs. Even though it appears that these small jobs do not require as much violence as McCall is used to well that all changes when his friend Susan goes off to Belgium to look into the mysterious murder-suicide of a high-level agency contact and there she meets an ugly end. McCall does not take lightly to this and then takes this very personal and is soon on the case utilizing his extraordinary intuition and impeccable killing skills to track down Susan’s killers and wipe them out. The film takes twists and turns, and I was not impressed by it at all. The Equalizers are not the best performances by Denzel Washington, but in my opinion his stellar performances over the last 40 years of all of his many other feature films weigh these not so good ones out. Overall Rating-C+
