Last Stop on the Reindeer Express by Maudie Powell-Tuck
From Miss Maci at Plymouth and Crestview Branches
Last Stop on the Reindeer Express by Maudie Powell-Tuck teaches young ones about missing family during the Holiday season. The story follows Mia, who is missing her Grandpa at Christmas time. She stumbles upon a magical mailbox that transports her to The Reindeer Express. From there, she travels over seas and cities on a reindeer's back until she reaches her grandfather's house. She hand delivers him a card, and gives him a special Christmas hug.
I feel like I related to the story and that it taught a good lesson to young ones. I especially loved the illustrations by Karl James Mountford. The die-cut flaps provided "doors" to the next scene. When you flipped the page, you felt as though you entered a new room. They were very interactive and could keep children entertained. The geometric design makes some of the cut-outs challenging to find, which enhanced the whimsicality of the story. This story took you through an adventure over rivers and mountains to be with family for Christmas.
