The idea of making and decorating gingerbread houses can be traced back to the Germans who are credited with starting the tradition around the holidays in the 16th century. Of course, the publication of a certain fairy tale by the Brother’s Grimm, Hansel and Gretel, soon made the creation of gingerbread houses much more popular. German immigrants coming to America brought the gingerbread house tradition across the ocean and into our homes and schools. Today there are gingerbread houses displayed everywhere that have been decorated lovingly with all kinds of sweet candies and icing.
Did you know that according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the world’s largest Gingerbread house was built in Texas in 2013? It was built for charity and its length measured 60 feet, its width was 42 feet, and its height at the highest point was 10 feet. And the largest gingerbread village was built in New York with 1,251 buildings in the village.
So if you want to have some family fun, remember to celebrate National Gingerbread House Day on December 12th (or any day that is convenient for you). Children of all ages and their parents and grandparents can do this activity together or individually. Better yet, why not host a gingerbread competition among friends and family? Finish off your activity with a gingerbread latte and some gingerbread cookies.
