Story Time Starter: Mail

December 07, 2018

This month's story time starter is all about mail! Who doesn't love getting letters and packages in the mail? There are so many great books about getting mail, sending mail, mail carriers, mail trucks, post offices, and even mailboxes!

Some of our favorite books about mail include The Day the Crayons Came Home by Drew Daywalt, It Came In the Mail by Ben Clanton, Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings, A Lucky Dog: Owney, U.S. Rail Mail Mascot by Dirk Wales, Millie Waits for the Mail by Alexander Steffensmeier, and Mail Carriers by Julie Murray.

Mail rhymes make story time much more fun! Here are some set to traditional tunes:

Mailing Letters
(Tune: "The Mulberry Bush")
This is the way we mail a letter,
Mail a letter, mail a letter.
This is the way we mail a letter,
So early in the morning.

The Mail Man
(”I’m a Little Tea Pot” tune)
Here comes the mailman, on his way.
Delivering the mail each and every day.
When he comes to my house, I run to see
If there’s a letter in the box for me!

Who Sent the Letter?
(Tune: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star)
I had a letter
Sent to me
From Somebody—
Who could it be?
Could it be Mollie?
Could that be so?
Could it be Joseph?
I don’t know.
I had a letter
Sent to me
From somebody—
Who could it be?

If you are looking for some songs to go with your rhymes, try "Junk Mail" from John McCutcheon’s Four Seasons: Springsongs or "The Mail Must Go Through" from Disney's Children's Favorites 1Finally, here are a few mail crafts to try!
