Story Time Starter: Hello & Goodbye

November 06, 2018 0 comments

This month's super special story time starter is all about saying "Hello" and "Goodbye" (but not necessarily at the same time)! We have some great books to share that go along with both aspects of the theme as well as some rhymes, activities, songs, and crafts.

Here are some of our favorite books that would be perfect for a toddler or preschool story time:

First, learn how to say hello in several different languages with Rachel Isadora's charming book titled Say Hello! Pair it with Hello World! by Manya Stojic for even more ways to say hello. Say goodbye to one season and hello to another with Goodbye Autumn, Hello Winter by Kenard Pak. (Also available is Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn.) You can even see how animals say hello with different sounds in Mary Murphy's lift-the-flap book Say Hello Like This!

Next, see how hellos and goodbyes can go together and lead to exciting adventures with Goodbye Brings Hello by Dianne White, Hello Goodbye Dog by Maria Gianferrari, and the Caldecott Medal winner The Hello, Goodbye Window written by Norton Juster and illustrated by Chris Raschka.

Last, we say goodbye, toodle-oo, and sayonara with all sorts of animals in the adorable Gotta Go, Buffalo by Kevin & Haily Meyers. This lift-the-flap book offers silly depictions of animals saying their goodbyes, finally ending with the sweet "when we part, you're in my heart." It's also the perfect way to end a story time!

Here are a few action songs and rhymes to supplement your story time:

Hi, Hello
(to the tune of London Bridge)

Hi, hello, and how are you? How are you?
How are you? Hi, hello, and how are you?
Nice to see you!
(wave hands the first time, then repeat and wave other body parts)

Clap and Sing Hello
(to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)

We clap and sing hello, we clap and sing hello,
With our friends at story time, we clap and sing hello.
(repeat using other action words like "stomp" "jump" or "snap")

How Do You Say Hi?

Hey! Hi! Howdy! Yo!
There are many ways to say hello!
Wave your hand, nod your head.
Smile big, or wink instead.
Blow a kiss, tip your hat.
Shake your hands, give a pat.
Of all the ways to say hello,
Here's the way I like to go...HELLO!
(do actions as they are said)

It's Time to Say Goodbye
(to the tune of If You're Happy and You Know It)

Oh, it's time to say goodbye to our friends (clap, clap)
It's time to say goodbye to our friends (clap, clap)
Story time is done today (wave goodbye)
So come again another day
It's time to say goodbye to our friends (clap, clap)

Thank You Rhyme

My hands say thank you with a clap, clap, clap
And my feet say thank you with a tap, tap, tap
Clap, clap, clap; tap, tap, tap
We roll our hands around and we say goodbye
(do actions as they are said)

Here are a few CDs to use with your story time:

And here are some crafts to finish things up:

  • Hello/Goodbye Elephant (link to print in color or black and white)

  • Goodbye Rhymes (print, glue onto a child's hand print traced onto construction paper, and attach to a craft stick)
(the download is free, but you'll have to register on the site first)

Thanks for stopping by! Enjoy your Hello & Goodbye story time!
