Hotel Transylvania 3

One of the reasons I enjoy children’s movies more than adult movies anymore is because children’s movies seek primarily to entertain, and they actually tell stories in doing so. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation does both in charming fashion. In the movie, daughter Mavis treats a reluctant Dracula to a cruise vacation. Since all of the monster family goes along for maximum pleasure, we get to enjoy all the fun, faux-fearsome creatures from the animators’ imaginations that made us laugh in the other Hotel Transylvania movies. The monster cruise is actually a guise of Dracula’s arch enemy Abraham Van Helsing to lure the monsters to their doom. The ship’s captain Ericka, for whom Dracula “zings,” is actually Van Helsing’s great-granddaughter, who is committed to killing Dracula himself. Good ends up triumphing over evil to lead to a happy ending, and along the way we get to enjoy some lighthearted humor and fun music. Although the ending is predictable and the tolerance message that seems obligatory for every children’s movie isn’t left out of this one, I give it a B because it is fun and tells a cute story. This movie is rated PG, but I find it family friendly.
