It seems that I have a penchant for over-the-top, far-fetched, action-filled movies, and Rampage was right up my alley – much to the chagrin of my husband and staff. As the movie opens, samples of a man-made pathogen fall to earth after an experiment in space goes terribly wrong. These samples are found by three separate creatures – a gorilla, a wolf, and a crocodile – that end up going on a destructive rampage as they try to reach Chicago, the home of the pathogen’s manufacturer, Energyne. Luckily, a former US Army Special Forces solider, David Okoye (played by Dwayne Johnson), is the head primatologist at the San Diego Wildlife Sanctuary, home of the infected gorilla, and he is more than qualified to take these three creatures down. The movie had humorous moments throughout, which helped to lighten the otherwise dark plotline, and the special effects were fairly well done. All in all, I enjoyed the film despite its shortcomings (I mean, how exactly did a monstrous crocodile get from the Louisiana Bayou to Chicago completely undetected?), and, if you are willing to believe that animals can more-than-double their size in less than 24-hours after inhaling a pathogen that supposedly modifies their genetic code, then you will enjoy it, too!
