From the opening titles Sherlock Gnomes is lighthearted fun. Well-done animation, an engaging story with enough tension to get me involved in the action without being too scary for young viewers, and an upbeat score based on Elton John tunes, make the movie good entertainment for all ages. When Gnomeo and Juliet are appointed new leaders of the Montague and Capulet garden gnomes on the occasion of their move into a new garden, they face an initial challenge in the rehab of their new home, which is interrupted when all the Montague and Capulet gnomes go missing. Sherlock Gnome, suspecting his arch-enemy Moriarty of the crime, shows up with his sidekick Watson to take on the case, and they reluctantly gain the persistent Gnomeo and Juliet as self-appointed partners in the search for their friends and family. Some surprising twists keep the plot from being too obvious. The movie also teaches a lesson about not taking our loved ones for granted, told without being excessively preachy. Overall grade: B
