Pete's Dragon

Having never seen the original 1977 version of Pete’s Dragon, I had no expectations when I sat down to watch the revamped 2016 film and, by the end, I had tears in my eyes. The story follows Pete, a small boy who finds himself alone in the woods after his parents die in a car accident. Scared and surrounded by vicious wolves, he is saved by a dragon who becomes his pseudo-parent, protector, and very best friend. The dragon – who Pete names Elliot – struck me as a mix between a large Labrador retriever and a big cat: Part clumsiness, part grace, both playful and serious, and covered in a sea of green fur. However, unlike in the original movie where Elliot was distinctly animated, the new Elliot was created using computer-generation imagery (CGI), which allowed him to have a realness that made the other characters’ responses to him all the more believable. The storyline was cute and a little predictable, but was engaging enough that I was rooting for a happy ending for both Pete and Elliot by the end.
