Buckeye Children's and Teen Book Award

September 02, 2014

It’s time for children to vote for their favorite book listed on the Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Award list!

The Buckeye Book Award is an award that was created in 1981, which allows and encourages children to voice their opinion on books they are reading. Often awards and lists of recommended literature for children are created by adults. The Buckeye Award allows children to nominate favorite books, read books nominated by others and then vote on favorites. This process can happen individually, through a group or organization, a school or a library. Educators and librarians often guide children through the process as well as towards quality, current literature.

Nomination of books begins January first and continues through mid-March. Books must have been published in the last two years. The five books that get the most nominations in each category are compiled into a list by a committee of teachers and librarians. When the list is complete, it is published on the Buckeye Book Award website, where readers can then begin the process of reading the books to choose a favorite. The time span of reading the books goes through the summer, perfect for summer reading!

A few titles from this year’s list

Around the first of September, voting begins as children choose their favorites from any or all of the categories. The votes are then tallied in four categories, grades K-2nd, 3rd -5th , 6th -8th and Teen. The winners in each category are announced in early December.

This award, one of many for children’s and teen literature, is intended to help provide children and parents with quality literature choices. It also offers recognition to authors and illustrators who continually strive to create such quality literature. And perhaps most importantly, these awards promote and encourage a love of reading in children, helping to create strong readers that recognize and appreciate the value and power of reading. And let’s not forget the sheer joy of reading a fantastic book!
