Happy Birthday, Laura Numeroff!
Ask most any child what happens if you give a mouse a cookie and you will probably get the reply – he’s going to ask for a glass of milk!
Possibly one of her most well-known books, Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a Mouse a Cookie has delighted children for years with her story of a boy and a mouse and their adventure that begins with a cookie!
Laura was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York in a house filled with art, music and books. Her father was an artist, her mother a teacher, both of whom encouraged their three daughters to explore and enjoy the arts. An early fan of the public library, she went every week when she was young. She knew from a young age she wanted to be a writer and graduated from college with a contract to have her first book published.
Laura illustrated and wrote her early books but after Felicia Bond illustrated If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, she has only written her books. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie was published in 1985 and has been followed by a series of “circle stories”, stories that end at the beginning of the story, including If You Give a Pig a Pancake, If You Give a Moose a Muffin and many others.« Back to Blog
