Searching for a Job
So you’ve decided to start searching for a job, but you’re not sure where to start, and you’ve got a ton of questions. What do you need to get a work permit, and where do you start looking? Well, stop worrying…we’ve got the answers!
What's a Work Permit...and Do I Need One?
A work permit is just like it sounds—it’s a permit that says you’re fit to work! Every minor employee (under the age of 18) has to have a valid work permit during the school year, and every 14-15 year old needs a valid work permit for employment any time of the year.
What Do I Need to Get a Work Permit?
In order to get a work permit in the state of Ohio, you need to fill out a pre-application form, and you’ll need the signatures of your parents/guardians and your employer. (Some jobs also require you to have a physician’s certificate, so you’ll need to have that form, too.)
Once you’ve finished the pre-application forms (and you have all the signatures you need,) you can return the forms to your school, where they’ll give you a work permit (based on the information on the form.) During the summer months, when the school office may be closed, you can use this form that just requires a parent or guardian’s permission.
Your employer must inform you of what rate of pay you will be receiving. If he or she does not, you can ask them to fill out the information on this form that both you and the employer will sign.
So…what if you can’t get the parental permission? There are still a number of jobs that don’t require a work permit such as babysitting, newspaper delivery, and mowing lawns.
How Do I Find a Job?
First of all, don’t be afraid to ask for help—talk to your parents, friends, teachers, everybody—because they may know of some job opportunities you never knew existed!
You should also check with your guidance counselor, because they may have job postings around their office…they can also help you pick a job that might help you with your future career (or help you figure out what kind of a career you want!)
There are also bunches of great websites you can explore, like Myfirstpaycheck.com. You can find local job listings at MansfieldAreaHelpWanted.com…and don’t forget to check the classified section of the newspaper!
What Should I Do if I Get a Job Interview?
Some employers like to interview people on the spot, and others set up interviews in advance. Remember to fill out your job application (or be ready to fill out an application!) It’s also a good idea to dress appropriately—it shows that you care about how you present yourself!
And most importantly…don’t panic! As nerve-wracking as interviews are, be yourself! Answer the questions to the best of your ability, and be sure to let them know why you’d be perfect for the job.
