Just in the “Nick” of Time Contest
Entire Month of December
Grades 6-12 – Many a celebrity has graced the big screen playing Santa.  See if you can match the appropriate Santas on our poster with the movie in which they star.  Turn in a completed entry form before the end of December.  If your entry is drawn as the winner, you’ll get a gift certificate to Cinemark. 

Paperback “Tree-Cycling”
Mon. Dec. 3   Bellville Branch          6 PM
Grades 6-12 - No trees will be destroyed for this project, but you will be able to deconstruct one of your most hated reading assignments.  Learn how to take an ordinary paperback book and turn it into a sparkly and shiny evergreen with just a few paper folds, some glue and lots of glitter.  Bring your own paperback or use one of ours. 

Ball-of-String Holiday Ornaments

Grades 6-12 – Using only string, glue, water and balloons, you will be able to add a whole lot of holiday cheer to your decorating this year.  These delicate ornaments have infinite patterns of interlacing lines that look complicated to create but are super easy with our secret technique.

Memory Wire Necklace

Grades 6-12 - You bring the creativity and we’ll supply the wire and the beads that you will need to create a unique and colorful choker.  Make one for yourself, or save it for a gift; that’s one thing you can cross off of your Christmas list.

Cocoa Snowman Gift

Take Your Best Shot! Photo Contest

Where: Photos may be dropped off at any M/RCPL location

Only one photo may be entered in each category.

Prizes: 1st and 2nd place will be awarded in the three different categories.  1st place prize is $25.00; 2nd place is $15.00.  Winners will be chosen by Friday, January 25, and prizes will be mailed the following week.  Entries will be on display through Wednesday, January 30, and may be picked up at the Reference Desk or Branch Library beginning on Monday, February 4.

Snowflakes in 3-D

Grades 6 -12 - You can’t catch these flakes on your tongue, but they will be really cool 3-D decorations for your room or tree.  We’ll show you how to fold, cut and twist colored paper to create these awesome winter designs.  Disclaimer: These are not your childhood construction paper snowflakes.

Confetti Glass

DIY Wrap Bracelet

Grades 6-12 - At this program we’ll show you how colorful cord, leather strips and a piece of chain can be transformed into a fashion statement for your wrist. This idea is so cool we just can’t keep it under wraps.

Grades 6-12 - Join a local cake artist at the library as she demonstrates edible Valentine art.  We’ll provide two delicious cupcakes, and you’ll collaborate with our expert to create awesome treats for your sweetheart. This program will “take the cake.”

Clay Snowmen

Grades 6-12 – Whether or not the snow is flying outside, we’ll be crafting adorable snowmen and women inside.  Using air-dry clay and other provided materials, you will be able to customize your own snowperson for use as an ornament or figurine.

Sweet Treats Unwrapped

Grades 6-12 – Think you know your Snickers from your Milky Ways?  Candy lovers will love the challenge of identifying these sweet treats from the inside out.  Turn in a completed entry form before the end of February.  If your entry is drawn as the winner, you’ll get a gift certificate to Cinemark.  Sweet tooth not required.

ACT/SAT Strategy Session

Cheryl Welch, Ph.D. from the Sylvan Learning Center will present an overview of how to raise ACT/SAT test scores.  You'll find out whether it is wise to leave questions blank, how to best guess, how to ace hard reading problems even when you are stuck in a difficult passage, and how to turn a tricky algebra problem into simple arithmetic.  Find out what the differences are in the ACT and SAT and how to decide which one you should take.  Parents are encouraged to attend with their student.
