How Can We Be Free?
by Dre’An Caprise Bonner, 12th Grade

How can we be free
when not everyone is treated equally,
when the promises that were said are not held for all people?
How can we be free
in a place where drugs overpower books,
when people enslave themselves with jail and retail sales,
when jail cells are more known than sail boats,
where we’ll buy a gun before we buy a coat?
How can we be free?
I ask, and I seek,
but the question remains the same.
Can we be free?
Can we make a way to end poverty?
Can we stop the war among ourselves and come together as a people,
so we can live in harmony?
How can we be free?
Do I want to know the answer?
Is life what it seems?
Is there a cure for cancer?
How can we be free?
Is it just the way of life
to always believe and never decide?
How can we be free
when we never give ourselves a chance,
and we never lend a hand?
How can we be free?
We must work together for the answer.
How can we be free?
