by Robbie Barnhill, 12th Grade
I was running through the woods in the dead of night,
talking to myself through all my fright.
Wind blowing; leaves rustling; owls moaning.
Animals scurry to escape the night’s droning.
Someone is following me, but I know not who.
On my left or on my right, I have no clue.
Nobody knows where I have gone,
left alone until the break of dawn.
Yet, I am still being followed by the dark,
answered only by my echoes when I hark.
Death is right beside me,
rarely hearing my plea.
Eerie, frigid claws of death dig into my flesh.
All of life’s memories flow into one mesh.
Many wonders lost in the darkness of death.
