Firestorm by David Klass

Jack is having the best night of his life. He has just broken the high school’s record of number of yards rushed for in the football game tonight. And then he and his girlfriend, P. J., met at the local diner for a little celebration.
But the minute Jack gets home, everything changes. His father is upset, because Jack was featured on the local television station’s sports report. That is obviously not the normal parental reaction. But as Jack is about to find out, he and his parents are not exactly normal. His dad tells Jack that they are going for a drive even though it is almost midnight. Jack’s mom kisses him goodbye like it’s the last time. And then he and his dad hop in their car and speed away. His strict, law-abiding father is flying down the road in excess of 100 mph, handling the vehicle just like a race car driver. This is a whole new side of his dad that Jack has never seen. And while his dad is speeding along, he tells Jack that Jack is the BEACON OF HOPE. He must escape from the people that are pursuing him.
And now his dad has turned off the main road straight into the wilderness. When the car cannot go any further, his dad pulls a weird-looking gun out of a bag on the seat and tells Jack to get out of the car and run as fast as he can away from this place. Jack is dumbfounded. So, to get Jack moving, his dad shoots his own foot off with the gun. If Jack doesn’t go now, he will have to witness his father killing himself. With strange, bat-like creatures hot on his tail, Jack runs for his life, and he keeps running from gorms, ninja fighters, and the mysterious Dargon.
