13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher
By teen lib
When Clay Jensen returns home from school that afternoon, he finds a shoebox-sized package wrapped in brown paper leaning against the front door of his house. Looking at the wrapping, he sees a scrawl on the outside addressing the package to him. Wow, he thinks, it’s fun to get mail, and this package doesn’t have a return address. Did the sender forget or was it intentional Clay wonders. Maybe the package is from a secret admirer.
But when Clay discovers 13 cassette tapes inside recorded by Hannah Baker, a classmate who had committed suicide two weeks earlier, he wants nothing more to do with that package. Unfortunately, as he listens to Hannah begin to explain the 13 reasons why she decided to end her life, Hannah’s voice tells Clay that his name is on these tapes. In some way, Clay is responsible for her death. Now he can’t stop listening, and what he discovers changes his life forever.
