Of Mice and MenOf Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

This short novel is one of Steinbeck’s finest works. It is considered a literary classic and is used in many classrooms.

The story begins with George and Lennie south of Salinas, California, in the 1930‘s. They are running away from their hometown of Weed. Lennie is mentally retarded, and George seems like a good leader who works hard to keep Lennie out of trouble. They are hardworking folks who are searching for jobs. To keep their hopes alive, they focus on the American dream of someday owning property of their own and having the freedom to do whatever they want.

Steinbeck captures the spirit of the neglected in society by presenting the story from their point of view. Within this story there are many symbols that explain the troubles and values of the afflicted. I would recommend this novel to anyone looking for a good story that is based on the adventure of trying to achieve dreams.
