Book Review: Balloons Over Broadway

Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade
by Melissa Sweet
From Miss Heather at Butler and Lucas

Melissa Sweet treats readers to an inventive biographical tale of a creative young boy who grows up to become the first puppeteer of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

This book is an excellent example of how to share factual information in an entertaining storybook format.  Did you know the parade began as a way for Macy’s to honor their immigrant employees?  Many of these workers came from places where holidays were celebrated with dancing and singing in the streets together.  This parade was formed from ideas from street carnivals all over the world and was a great way for the employees to celebrate together.

Read this book and discover how this puppeteer learned to create those giant, inflatable animals we see every year on television and even what part Ohio played in helping to make this possible!
