Book Review: Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site

Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lichtenheld
From Miss Mary at Main

If you are looking for a bedtime story to please your truck-loving pre-school and early elementary children, let me recommend Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site, written by Sherri Duskey and illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld.  This book was one of the best-selling children’s books of 2011 and for good reason.  It is a fun, colorful book full of construction trucks, complete with amazing faces and big jobs to finish before nighttime comes.  As the sun is setting at the construction site, five big, tough trucks are also finishing up their day and preparing for bed.  The rhyming text describes each vehicle’s last job of the day ending with the message “Sh…goodnight, Dump Truck (Crane Truck, Cement Mixer, Bull Dozer, Excavator), goodnight.”  Soon all five trucks are resting quietly after a busy day.  “Construction site, all tucked in tight.  The day is done, turn off the light.”

Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site is a beautifully illustrated book for children.  Each page contains a detailed picture of a truck hard at work doing his special job.  As the day turns to night, the golden background turns to pink while the sun sets and to dark blue when the moon rises and the trucks are sleeping peacefully.

Construction and truck books have always been favorites with preschoolers and this book is no exception.  Check this out at the library and your child will want you to read it over and over again.  Who knows, it may even send your little ones off to dreamland with visions of cement mixers and cranes dancing in their heads.
