Join us in wishing Mr. Gary Paulsen, children’s author extraordinaire, a very happy birthday today!
We love recommending Hatchet, probably Mr. Paulsen’s most well-known and most-read book, to those boys who just don’t know what they want to read (although to be fair, girls love it, too!). Kids of all ages seem to enjoy the story of Brian Robeson, who after an airplane crash, has to survive on his own in the Canadian wilderness with only a few meager supplies.
Even if you’ve never wondered what it would be like to be alone in the wilderness and what you would have to do to survive, if you love adventure and a really great story, you can’t get a better middle-grade read than Hatchet, or any of the others in the series (The River, Brian’s Winter, Brian’s Return, and Brian’s Hunt).
Mr. Paulsen has also written a number of nonfiction titles, some of which show what life was like as a child growing up in Minnesota. Three of his fiction books (Dogsong, 1986; Hatchet, 1988; The Winter Room, 1990) received a Newbery Honor.
Not hooked yet? Check out one of the Brian books on CD. They are voiced by actors Peter Coyote and Richard Thomas. Your family will love listening along on your next family road trip.
