Exciting News!

I love doing the Marvelous Monday  programs at Main Library.  We are in the middle of our third set of sessions (so hard to believe!) and the kids and parents just keep coming back for more!  If you aren’t familiar with this program that’s okay – bring in your children who are ages 5 & up to Main and find out!  Marvelous Mondays was conceived on the idea that kids, who are full of innate curiosity, might like to explore the world…at the library!

We’ve been fortunate enough to have a few special guests in the past who brought a little more energy and a different perspective to our programs.  Sogbety Diomande, professional drummer from the Ivory Coast, taught us how to play djembe drums.  A local teacher and nurse visited the program when we were exploring what people “do” for a living.  And Lilly, the therapy dog who is well- known in the library, paid a surprise visit when we were discussing pets.

But…we’ve never had an author visit us.  Until now!  I am so excited and honored to let you all know that Sibert Award winning author Sy Montgomery, originator of  the Scientists in the Field series of nonfiction books for children, will be visiting Main Library on January 16th via conference call to answer your questions!

Sy’s book Kakapo Rescue (2010 Sibert Medal Winner) and Quest for the Tree Kangaroo (2007 Sibert Honor Book) are two of my all-time favorite nonfiction children’s books.  The great detail and care to which she and photographer Nic Bishop give to their subjects is truly inspiring and jaw-dropping.  I emailed Sy to let her know how much I and the many children I’ve recommended her books to enjoy them and she not only wrote back but offered to talk to us during our program!

So please join us on January 16th at 6:30 PM sharp for a conversation with Sy Mongtomery. Bring your questions about her work, kakapos, tree kangaroos…or snow leopards, tarantulas, pink dolphins, golden moon bears (available through SearchOhio), or snakes (since she’s written about those as well!)  Sy has traveled the world in order to write her books, so think about questions to ask her about her travels and what’s she’s seen as well.
