The 39 Clues Series
from Miss Jennie at Ontario

One of the things that I love best about my job as a Children’s Assistant is keeping up on new books for children. Picture books, non-fiction books, readers, board books and my personal favorite…children’s fiction and chapter books.

Although I can’t possibly read all the new books that come into the library, I do try to read the award winners and ones that have received good reviews. That is how I happened to come across The Maze of Bones, the first book in the series, The 39 Clues. (And I have to admit, I could not put the book down!) I was instantly drawn in to the legacy of the Cahill family and the search for the 39 clues!

There are just so many things about these books that I love! I love the characters Dan (11), Amy (14), Nellie, Grace and of course the cat Saladin. You can’t help but root for them the whole way through the series. Two kids, their au pair, and a cat up against some of the meanest, toughest, wealthiest people in the world. Using what they have, Amy’s smarts,  Dan’s excellent memory and Nellie’s daring, they seem to stay one step ahead of the other members of the family.

I love the fact that the readers learn some factual information about distant relatives like Mozart, Benjamin Franklin, William Shakespeare, Amelia Earhart, Thomas Edison and many, many more. The readers also learn about real events in history and geography. I also love that there are clues and secret codes hidden throughout the books that the readers have to figure out. Not to mention all the online challenges and activities for the readers to solve.

After I read the tenth books in the series, I have to say I was kind of sad to see it all come to an end…. Or did it? The authors added an eleventh book that leads into a whole new series about the rivalry between the Cahills and the Vespers, explaining more about why the Cahill family split up into the five branches and how the search for the 39 clues began.

So be on the look out for The 39 Clues: Cahills vs. Vespers Book 1: The Medusa Plot coming to a library near you in August 2011!
