"Me, Too . . ."
Adults talk about learning to read.
Acknowledgments
Originally, the concept for this book was to focus on
the life success stories of adult learners. As the writing and interviewing
process continued, we found ourselves celebrating the diversity of our
community and the unique place each literacy participant has in it.
The folks who helped create this book are
all literacy advocates. Some are volunteers; some are learners. It was
wonderful to witness the pride and pleasure people achieved by being able
to share their stories. It is encouraging to know we all share very similar
goals and dreams and the hope of making the quality of life in our worlds
better.
After talking with several tutors, we composed
a list of prospective learners and tutors who would be willing to share
their experiences. Some people chose to use pseudonyms for privacy while
others were comfortable either way.
We tried to capitalize on the diverse talents
of those willing to help in this endeavor. A special thank you goes out
to Jane Soulen, who was inspired to create the pen and ink drawings that
illustrate the text. Another key person in development of the manuscript
and editing was Fran Damoff. Not only did she assist in typing, she gave
very useful feedback and moral support. We also would like to thank Kim
Ross-Polito for her ideas for marketing and promotion of the book.
In all, over twenty-five people assisted
in the project, and with their help, we have created a clear picture of
what it means to learn to read as an adult.
