TITLE: Branch Clerk, part- time – Madison Branch
REPORTS TO: Branch Manager
SALARY: $10.27/hr; min. of 15 hpw; Includes days, evenings and weekends;
Grade 10; non-exempt
General Summary:
Under direct supervision of the Branch Manager, assists with the daily and varied operations of the Branch. This position requires considerable contact with the public.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent education and work experience
- Clerical skills, methods and practices
- Good reading and comprehension skills
- General math skills
- Good attention to detail and accuracy
- Basic computer and keyboarding skills
- Good oral communication and listening skills
- Public service skills (public service experience highly desirable)
- Professional, courteous and approachable demeanor
- Must be comfortable working in a team environment
Knowledge of:
- Library policy and procedures (may be acquired after hire)
- Library online circulation system, catalog and resources (may be acquired after hire)
- Office/computer equipment use
- Basic Internet searching and email skills
- Safe work practices
Skills and Abilities to:
- Understand and have a detailed knowledge of library policy and procedures, online catalog and circulation system
- Accurately sort, file, and read numbers and letters alphabetically and numerically
- Follow oral and written instructions and/or verbal directions
- Communicate with customers in an effective manner
- Be able to work independently in the absence of supervision
- Manage simultaneous duties as required, as defined by Branch needs
- Analyze reference questions, and assist and/or refer customer appropriately
- Make minor decisions in accordance with Library policies and procedures
- Lift, bend, stretch, stoop, walk and/or move bags of materials between 40-60 lbs.
- Stand for approximately 85% of workday
- Develop and maintain professional working relationships with Branch Manager and co-workers
- Carry out essential duties and responsibilities reliably with 3 months of on-the-job experience and training
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Note: The duties listed below illustrate but do not limit the tasks performed by this classification.
- Provide direct service to the public by checking materials in and out, handling circulation procedures and concerns, issuing new and replacement cards, branch opening and closing procedures, etc.
- Assisting customers in use of online catalog, online resources, copier, and any other equipment at Branch location
- Assist customers with basic computer needs, such as help with word processing, online forms, etc.
- Contribute to bulletin boards and displays as requested
- Receipt and disbursement of the daily delivery service and all related functions and paperwork
- Assist in answering and/or referral of basic reference and reader’s advisory questions
- Empty book drop as needed, including some Sundays
- Assist in opening and closing procedures, as required
- Tasks associated with Summer Library Program, or any other library sponsored programs
- Assist with organization and maintenance of branch materials
Additional duties:
- Assist with moving furniture and equipment as needed
- Snow shoveling and salting as needed
- Pick up trash outdoors as needed
- May be asked to compile and report statistics
- Perform minor cataloging changes as assigned by Branch Manager
- Weed materials under direct supervision of Branch Manager
- Assist with shelving of materials
- Attend meeting[s] scheduled by the Branch Manager
- Attend Staff Development Day, workshops, seminars and conferences as appropriate
- Adheres to, supports and effectively implements Administration and Board policy, procedures and core values
- Performs additional duties and assignments, as requested
