  • Master of Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited university.
  • Extensive and thorough knowledge of children’s materials and services.
  • Demonstrated mastery of techniques, programs, and methods of providing children, their parents, and caregivers with superior programming, materials, and associated services.
  • Supervisory experience, three years of which must be in a library setting, is required.
  • Five or more years’ professional experience, including children’s services and public service responsibilities, in a multi-branch library system of equal or greater size to Mansfield/Richland County Public Library, is required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Extensive experience with project development and implementation.
  • Advanced experience managing the planning and implementation of complex system-wide programs, materials selection and distribution, and community outreach associated with those programs.
  • Advanced organizational skill, including attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Intermediate-to-advanced skill in the use of computers.
  • Public speaking experience and competence.
  • Program delivery experience to children’s audiences of varying ages.
  • No criminal record, felony or misdemeanor.
  • Valid Ohio driver’s license, to be obtained within 60 days after date of hire.


Advanced Knowledge of:

  • Children’s literature, children’s programs, and trends in library services for children.
  • The principles of intellectual freedom, confidentiality, Ohio public records statutes and case law, and the Code of Professional Ethics.
  • Library policies and procedures (acquired after hire).
  • Safe work practices.
  • Sophisticated Library-related Internet searching.

  • Orient/train, schedule, assign, delegate, supervise, discipline and evaluate the work of Children’s Department Staff; and collaborate with Branch Managers to evaluate the work of Branch Children’s Assistants.

  • Work closely and cooperatively with all other Library Coordinators, Managers and Department Staff.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Plan, coordinate, prioritize, manage, supervise, implement, train, motivate and evaluate Children’s Staff and services system-wide.
  • Set short- and long-term goals, and develop objectives for children’s services system-wide, within the constraints of the Library budget.
  • Collaborate with appropriate Collection Development and other Library Staff in the selection of all children’s print and audio materials for the Library.
  • Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate system-wide the annual Summer Learning Program [SLP].
  • Coordinate system-wide all children’s information services, including print and online reference, reader’s advisory, and instruction.
  • Approve, assign and schedule all Children’s Department programming, in-library and offsite.
  • Establish ongoing effective communication with, and outreach to, all Mansfield City Schools; and with county school systems served by the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library.
  • Prepare narrative and statistical reports, etc. as assigned.
  • Schedule and conduct regularly recurring Children’s Staff meetings; and act on issues discussed at such meetings, reporting concerns to the Library Director, as necessary.
  • Participate in budget forecasting and planning; and implement and monitor spending in assigned budgets.
  • Work collaboratively with the Communications Coordinator regarding materials associated with children’s services and programs.
  • Documents and handles appropriately and in consistent ways conflict situations, including disciplinary procedures, working cooperatively with the Human Resources Manager to address and resolve such situations timely.

  • Participate in community and professional organizations, serving as a representative of and advocate for the Library.
  • Attend Staff Development Day, workshops, seminars and conferences, as appropriate.
  • Engage actively in personal and Staff professional development; and monitor changes in the profession through meetings, professional association membership and activities, and professional reading.
  • Perform additional tasks and assignments, as required by the upward chain of command, which for this position is the Library Director.
