We have some nice picture book biographies of Noah Webster, if you'd like to learn more about him and how he helped to standardize the English language. Written by Tracey Fern, W is for Webster: Noah Webster and his American Dictionary tells the story of a young Noah Webster, who started collecting words for a speller, including everyday words like "scab," "grub," and "mop," and moved on to create a small dictionary. He thought the book would take him five years to finish. It took twenty, but his dictionary today is the second-most printed book in the English language.
Also of note are Noah Webster: Man of Many Words by Catherine Reef, Noah Webster and His Words by Jeri Chase, and Noah Webster: Weaver of Words by Pegi Deitz Shea, all of which offer more information and insight into what made Noah Webster so interested in words and in promoting the American language.
