Happy Birthday, Stan Berenstain!
Today we celebrate the birthday of half of the duo who created the memorable (and lesson-filled) stories about the Berenstain Bear family, Stan Berenstain! (His wife, Jan Berenstain, is the other half.) It might be hard to find a child of the 70s or 80s who didn't read the Berenstain Bears rather than counting all those who did.
According to the website BerenstainBears.com, "Stan and Jan Berenstain published the first Berenstain Bears book in 1962, and the series has gone on to capture the hearts and minds of children across generations and across the globe. In the 50+ years since The Big Honey Hunt," their first book, "the Bear family has grown from three to five members; the Berenstain Bears have been translated into over a dozen languages; and over 300 million books have been sold worldwide."
You can find out much more about Stan and Jan Berenstain, learn about the characters, print coloring pages, explore Bear Country, and watch cooking videos on the website as well. Over at the PBS website, you'll find booklists, activities, episodes, and lesson plans.
Here at the library, we have lots of the classic and new stories (with son Mike Berenstain carrying on his parents' work) in our collection. We also have numerous DVDs with episodes from PBS kids. If you want to learn more about authors Stan and Jan Berenstain, read Down A Sunny Dirt Road, where they tell their own stories from early childhood until their marriage, then continue the tale together to the present day.
