Story Time Starter: Let's Dance!

July 21, 2016

Do you like to dance? Here at the library, we love to dance during story time! So much so that we want to share our favorite dancing books, rhymes, and songs with you!

There are many different ways to dance, just read Dance with Me by Charles R. Smith, Jr. and How Can You Dance? by Rick Walton and you will see. And people aren't the only ones who like to dance--animals love dancing, too! Penguin Cha-Cha by Kristi Valiant, Rupert Can Dance by Jules Feiffer, Dancing Feet! by Lindsey Craig, and the classic Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton show animals and their grand dancing skills. Angelina Ballerina loves ballet while Gerald the Giraffe finds he can dance to his own beat in Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae. Dancing with Dinosaurs by Jane Clarke and Harriet Dancing by Ruth Symes round out our list of great books!

Rhymes work well between stories and are fun to say and do! Here are some to try.

Dance Your Fingers Up
Dance your fingers up, dance your fingers down
Dance your fingers to the side, dance them all around
Dance them on your shoulders, dance them on you head
Dance them on your tummy, and put them all to bed

Magic Feet
Have you seen my magic feet? (point to feet)
Dancing down the magic street? (Pull knees up, pat feet on the floor)
Sometimes fast, sometimes slow, (make motion of feet to match)
Sometimes high, sometimes low?
Jean Warren

Shake My Sillies Out
Gotta shake, shake, shake my sillies out,
Shake, shake, shake, my sillies out.
Shake, shake, shake, my sillies out,
And wiggle my waggles away.
Additional verses
.....clap, clap, clap my crazies out...
.....jump, jump, jump my jiggles out...

What about some dancing songs to go with your stories? We like these:

Finally, finish with a dancing craft! Here are a few good ideas:

We hope you enjoy dancing your way through some good books!
