Book Review: When Life Gives You O.J.
When Life Gives You O.J. by Erica S. Perl
From Miss Sarah at Bellville Branch
"Ten year old Zelly Fried has been begging her parents for a dog for a long time but they keep turning her down so her grandpa, Ace, tells her to treat an empty orange juice container like it is a dog to show her parents she is responsible. Zelly is having a difficult summer because her family just moved from Brooklyn to Vermont and her only friend in Vermont, Allie, is going to summer camp. Zelly ends up taking the empty orange juice container which she calls O.J. for walks. Zelly makes a new friend over the summer named Jeremy who is Jewish like her and he doesn’t mind O.J. Zelly has a huge falling out with her Grandpa and Jeremy when she is invited to a sleepover at Allie’s house with other girls but Zelly doesn’t want to take O.J. with her and get made fun of.
"When Life Gives You O.J. is an engaging story that explores the relationship between children and their grandparents. Grandparents can be sweet and fun but they can be challenging as well the same goes for grandchildren. I listened to the audiobook version of this book which I checkout via the Ohio Digital Library. If library customers need assistance with downloading ebooks or eaudiobooks, library staff is always willing to help. The audiobook narrator, Abigail Revasch, has been a voice-over artist for many years and does an excellent job reading this story with fluency, expression, and using some differentiation among character voices. The editing and production of the audiobook seemed to be smooth and does not distract the reader with long pauses or weird background noises. This audiobook could be a great source of entertainment during a family road trip. Children will enjoy reading or listening to this endearing book and can identify with the struggles of friendship and family. There is also a sequel to When Life Gives You O.J. titled Aces Wild."
