Story Time Starter: Turtles
Did you know that there is a special day just for turtles? Well, there is! World Turtle Day is always celebrated on May 23 to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.
There are many ways to celebrate World Turtle Day, anything from wearing green, learning about turtle conservation, or reading books about turtles.
So here at the library to celebrate World Turtle Day, we wanted to share our favorite turtle stories, rhymes, and crafts with you!
Here are some of our favorite turtle books: Turtle Day by Douglas Florian, Turtle Island by Kevin Sherry, Tiger and Turtle by James Rumford, Emma's Turtle by Eve Bunting, and Hip and Hop Don't Stop by Jef Czekaj.
Here are some of our favorite songs, rhymes, and fingerplays all about turtles:
I had a little turtle, his name was Tiny Tim.
I put him in the bathtub, to see if he could swim.
He drank up all the water, he ate up all the soap.
And now he's sick in bed, with a bubble in his throat!
Tune: "On Top of Old Smokey"
Some turtles swim over the ocean.
Some turtles swim over the sea.
Some turtles grow very big
As big as you and me.
Turtles, turtles, swimming here and there.
Turtles, turtles, turtles everywhere.
HERE IS MY TURTLE
Here is my turtle, (Form fist and extend thumb.)
He lives in a shell. (Put thumb inside fist.)
He like his home
Very well. (Nod head)
He pokes his head out (Pop out thumb.)
When he wants to eat. (Circle thumb around.)
And pulls it back in
When he wants to sleep. (Put thumb back inside fist.)
I'M A LITTLE TURTLE
(tune of I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little turtle,
I crawl so slow,
And carry my house
Wherever I go.
When I get tired
I pull in my head,
My legs and my tail,
And go to bed!
Finally, here are some fun crafts that you can do at home:
