Happy Birthday, Patrick McDonnell!
Happy St. Patrick's Day! And happy birthday to the very Irish-sounding Mr. Patrick McDonnell, children's author and illustrator!
Starting out as a cartoon creator and freelance illustrator, Patrick McDonnell first appeared on the radar of children's book publishing with The Gift of Nothing in 2005, with a charming story which featured Mooch the cat and Earl the dog, popular characters from his comic strip, Mutts. Then in 2012, his book highlighting the early life of naturalist Jane Goodall, Me...Jane, won a Caldecott Award Honor, quite a distinguished award!
Most books (some of which feature Mooch and Earl), like the one-word titles including Art, South, and Wag!, and The Monster's Monster, A Perfectly Messed Up Story, and Thank You and Goodnight were written and illustrated by Patrick McDonnell. Other titles were illustrated by him, but written by other authors, including The Skunk by Mac Barnett and Silly Wonderful You by Sherri Dusky Rinker.
Each story is a treat for reading aloud at story time or sharing with a child one-on-one in a quieter setting. Check out all of the books written and illustrated by the talented Patrick McDonnell in our catalog. We guarantee you'll find something to like!
