Book Review: Is Mommy?

February 24, 2016

Is Mommy? Written by Victoria Chang and Illustrated by Marla Frazee
From Miss Amanda at Plymouth and Crestview

This picture book may evoke a variety of reactions from its audience, but the message is a constant: unconditional love goes both ways in parent/child relationships. There are many books out there reassuring children that we love them no matter what – even when they lose their tempers, break the rules, etc.; but few books tell the other side of the story.

In this book, kids are asked whether Mommy is pretty or ugly, nice or mean; and every time the answer is the negative and the kids revel in the naughty fun. Frazee’s warm and silly illustrations give the reader a glimpse of mothers through children’s eyes with vibrant colors against a creamy manila background. In the end, the answer is a resounding “Yes!” when asked if they love their Mommy no matter what. Mothers aren’t always perfect, and kids don’t expect them to be. They are, however, always loved.
