Story Time Starter - Clothes

February 4, 2016

Well, we missed posting a story time starter last month, but the good news is that it's back! The bad news is that winter is still hanging around (thanks a lot, Mr. Groundhog!), and we are all dressed in layers to try and stay warm.

So now is the perfect time to have a story time about clothes, we think! From outer coverings like hats, coats, scarves, and boots to underclothing like socks and underwear — and everything else in between — we have lots of choices of things to read about!

Some of our favorite books for younger children include the classic Animals Should Definitely Not Wear Clothing. by Judi Barrett, Froggy Gets Dressed by Jonathan London, and My Very First Look at Clothes by Christiane Gunzi. For the older crowd, we love Naked Mole Rat Gets Dressed by Mo Willems, The Emperor's New Clothes by Marcus Sedgwick, and Hello, Sun! by Dayle Ann Dodds. Of course, you can't go wrong with books about underwear, either!

Here are a few rhymes and songs about the clothes we wear:

Clothing Color Game
(To the tune of “Do You Know the Muffin Man?”)

If you’re wearing red today, red today, red today
If you’re wearing red today, stand up and shout “hooray”
…continue with other colors and/or actions

Hat and Shirt, Pants and Shoes
(Tune: Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes)

Hat and shirt, pants and shoes.
Pants and shoes.
Hat and shirt, pants and shoes.
Pants and shoes.
Oh, I can get dressed by myself.
Hat and shirt, pants and shoes.
Pants and shoes.

Use Your Eyes

Use your eyes, use your eyes,
You can look and see, If you are wearing a shirt, point it out to me.

(Repeat and substitute in pants, socks, and shoes.)

When Winter Comes

When winter comes, I wear a coat,
To play out in the snow.
I wear a hat and scarf and gloves,
Whenever cold winds blow.

When summer comes and days are warm,
I put my coat away.
I wear shorts and sunglasses
On every sunny day!

And here are a few songs that would be perfect for story time:

To wrap things up, here are some awesome crafts your kids will love:

Have fun and don't worry if you find yourself putting layers on and taking them off repeatedly throughout the day. (That's our weather for you!)
