Happy Wright Brothers Day!

December 17, 2015

If you were taking a vacation to someplace far away, how do you think you would get there? By car? By bus? By train? By airplane? Well, thanks to the Wright Brothers, you can get take the fastest way, by airplane!

Who were the Wright Brothers you may be asking?

Orville and Wilbur Wright were born in Dayton Ohio in the late 1800s. They owned a bike repair shop and factory, but were interested in gliders and flying. They loved to work on with pieces and parts of machinery, so they started building movable wings and engines, which led then to invent the first airplane.

On December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers were in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and on that day, they were the first people to fly an airplane. The Wright Brothers made 4 flights that day and managed to fly the airplane for almost one minute! Today, we might not think that is not very long, but without the Wright Brothers and that historic flight in Kitty Hawk, we might not have been able to fly around the world in airplanes.

Below is a video taken in 1908 of the Wright Brothers in flight:

You can still visit the Wright Brothers house and bicycle workshop at Greenfield Village in Michigan and see one of their first plane prototypes in Dayton, OH at the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.
