America Recycles Day

November 15, 2015

Today is National America Recycles Day!

What is recycling exactly? It’s when you take waste, and turn it into something else that can be reused. When you recycle, the garbage doesn’t sit in a landfill, it is broken down where it can be sent to a factory to be turned into something else. Many things can be recycled like plastic bags, paper, pop cans, cardboard boxes, and even cell phones! Recycling is very important and here are a few ways it helps the environment:

  • Reduces amount of waste sent to landfills

  • Prevents pollution

  • Saves energy

  • Saves natural resources like trees and water

But what does a recycling plant look like? What does it look like when pop cans or plastic bottles are broken down and made into something new? LaVar Burton takes us on a field trip to a recycling plant below:

What can we do to recycle in Richland County? You can find rules on where to recycle certain things here and different drop off locations all over the county here. If you don’t know where or how to start recycling at home, you can find tips here. Finally, why not take the recycling pledge, where you and your family can promise to learn about recycling, try to recycle more, and talk to family and friends about recycling. Click here to take the pledge! For more book ideas on how to recycle or make crafts out of old things around the house, check out some books here.
