Story Time Starter — Vegetables
This month’s story time is all about vegetables!
From carrots and spinach to eggplant and peppers, there are all sorts of colors, sizes, varieties, and shapes of vegetables. A great book to start with is Up, Down & Around, by Katherine Ayres. Children can learn about all the different ways vegetables grow, like under the ground, above the ground, or around and around on vines. An excellent follow up book to show pictures of real vegetables is I Eat Vegetables, by Hannah Tofts. Upon opening the full-page foldout to look inside the vegetable, kids can see which need to be peeled before eating and which have seeds or other interesting things inside.
For the funnier side of vegetables, try either Vegetables in Underwear, by Jared Chapman or Monsters Don’t Eat Broccoli, by Barbara Jean Hicks. We’ve also got plenty of super non-fiction books that would offer a realistic view of how vegetables are grown, harvested, and eaten. Encouraging children to grow, pretend, and play with their food might even help them like vegetables and other unfamiliar foods even more!

We’ve got some simple rhymes picked out to go along with the stories:
Five Fat Peas
Five fat peas in a pea pod pressed
One grew, two grew, and so did all the rest
They grew, and they grew, and they did not stop
Until one day, the pod went “POP!”
I have ten little vegetables,
And they all taste yummy to me.
They grow everywhere,
Would you like to see?
I can pick them from up high,
I can pick them from down low.
I can chop them and put them in a pot,
And cook them nice and slow.
One potato, two potatoes,
Three potatoes, four
Five potatoes, six potatoes,
Seven potatoes more!
Eight potatoes, nine potatoes,
Ten potatoes, then…
We dig them up
And start again!
