Happy Birthday, Ann M. Martin!

August 12, 2015

Author Ann M. Martin celebrates her birthday today! She has been writing books since 1983, that’s more than 30 years and she has written over 100 books! She is still is writing today, and doesn’t look like she’ll be hanging up her pen anytime soon.

Ann has always enjoyed writing. Even before she could write, she would tell her mother stories, and her mother would write them down for her. Before she became a full time author, she worked as a teacher and editor of children’s books. Some of her favorite authors include Lewis Carroll, P.L. Travers, Astrid Lindgren, and Roald Dahl. All of these authors inspired her to become a writer herself.

She said that she “gets the ideas for her books from many different places. Some are based on personal experiences, while other are based on childhood memories and feelings, “Many of Anne M. Martin’s books are based on contemporary problems or events like disagreements with friends, mental illness, and growing up, just to name a few.

She is most well-known for The Babysitter’s Club book series that ran from 1986-2000. Ann Martin said that even though the characters Kristy, Claudia, Mary Anne, Stacey, Mallory, Jessi, and Abigail are not real people, their different personalities are based on people she knows.

After finishing the Babysitter’s Club series, Ann M. Martin kept writing books series like The Doll People and Main Street, but prefers to write stand-alone novels.   In 2003, she won the Newbery Honor Medal for her novel, A Corner of the Universe, which is set during the summer of 1960 and is about 11 year old Hattie who immediately bonds with her uncle who she has never met. Hattie takes immediate liking to his way of seeing the world which is different from her parents. If you’re looking for a book that deals with growing up and learning about mental illness, look no further.

Ann loves animals and has 3 cats, Gussie, Pippin, and Simon. When she is not writing, her hobbies include reading, sewing, and needlework; her favorite thing to do is to make clothes for children.

Here are some words of wisdom from Ann, “Read, read, read! That’s the most important thing you can do- plus it’s a lot of fun!” That’s very good advice! Find the rest of Ann Martin’s books in our catalog, as well as a movie version of The Babysitter’s Club.
