Happy Birthday, Patricia Polacco!

Author and illustrator Patricia Polacco celebrates her birthday today! The author and illustrator of more than 90 books, Ms. Polacco’s writing and illustrating career has spanned almost 30 years. And considering that she didn’t actually publish anything until she was in her 40s, she’s definitely been busy making up for lost time!

We love the variety of topics she addresses in her picture books and the finesse and care in which she does so. The selection of topics includes a wide range from important social issues like bullying, racial prejudice, same-sex parents, and immigrants to milder subjects like looking for lost toys, giving Christmas gifts, appreciating treasured family heirlooms, and being afraid of thunderstorms.

Cultural folk tales and family stories also make up a lot of Patricia Polacco’s fare. History figures prominently in other books, and people like Clara Barton and Abraham Lincoln have had their stories told, while other stories are set in historical times, like the Civil War, and feature soldiers or the Underground Railroad.

While it’s hard to choose a favorite book written by Patricia Polacco, some of the more popular titles we get requests for include Thank You, Mr. Falker; Thunder Cake; The Keeping Quilt; Rechenka’s Eggs; and Mr. Lincoln’s Way. Ms. Polacco actually was asked which book of hers was her favorite, to which she replied, “That's like asking me which one of my kids is my favorite. I love them all for different reasons.”

Good answer—we love all books equally here at the library, too! Find the rest of Patricia Polacco's books in our catalog, as well as several books made into movies.
